In 1989, Mr. van der Wateren began his studies at the then Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (now North-West University), earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991 and his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1994.
1997 - 1999
Jaco van der Wateren completed his articles at Janse van Rensburg & Strydom in Westonaria, where he also worked for a year as a Professional Assistant. In 1997 he joined Borman, Snyman & Barnard Inc. as a Professional Assistant and became a partner in 1999.
2005 - 2009
2010 Onwards
Mr van der Wateren has more than 30 years’ of legal experience in various aspects of the law and currently focuses on commercial law, property and notarial matters, estate planning, wills, and estate administration, while also managing commercial litigation.
Outside his legal profession, Jaco van der Wateren is a dedicated marathon athlete. He has participated in ten Comrades Marathons, over ten Two Oceans Marathons, three 100-mile races, two half Ironman events, and one full Ironman event.
For many years he has worked and served the community in which he held various leadership positions, which include as the chairman of the Potgietersrus Athletics Club, elder and deacon in the Reformed Church, the chairman and founding member of the Kierieklapper Kunstefees which was presented in aid of the service center for the elderly (Dienssentrum vir Bejaardes). Mr van der Wateren was the chairman of the Kierieklapper Kunstefees for 10 years and he served for 10 years on the management of the service center for the elderly (Dienssentrum vir Bejaardes), of which he was the chairman for 6 years.
He was on the Governing Body of Piet Potgieter High School for 13 years where he was the vice-chairman for several years and then served as chairman. During the time he served on the board and committee as the organizer he was involved in several large community projects, including the Kierieklapper Kunstefees, Cansa’s Run for Hope, several marathons, and other athletic events and fundraising events such as the 210km Charity Race for fundraising for the elderly.
