He began his career at the Department of Justice, serving for five years. During this tenure, he worked as a State Prosecutor for three years and as a Magistrate for two years. Concurrently, he completed his LLB degree part-time at UNISA, which was conferred upon him in 1987.
In 1987 and 1988, Hennie Smit served as a Candidate Attorney and was admitted as an Attorney on the 21st of February 1989.
1989 - 2022
He holds the right of appearance in the High Court. Since 1989, he has been practicing law full-time, initially in partnership and subsequently as a sole practitioner for 15 years.
2023 Onwards
As of April 2023, Hennie Smit is employed as an Attorney at Borman, Snyman & Barnard Inc. While he does not specialize in any specific area of law, he has a distinct preference for court work. Additionally, he has a keen interest in criminal defence and further serves as the head of the Correspondent and Collections department, attending to matters in both the Mahwelereng and Mokopane District and Regional courts.
